The Florida State Turnpike Authority was created in 1953 (Ch. 28128, Laws) to construct, operate, and maintain the Sunshine State Parkway between Dade and Duval counties. The Authority consisted of five members, one of whom was a member of the State Road Dept. The 1953 Legislature limited construction of the turnpike to 110 miles north from a point in Dade County.
